German Kirschmichel (Cherry Bread Pudding)

A traditional German cherry bread pudding, soft and fruity with a hint of vanilla.

Ingredients:

  • 4-5 slices of day-old white bread (preferably stale, or you can use rolls or brioche)
  • 400g fresh or jarred cherries (pitted, drained if using jarred)
  • 500 ml (about 2 cups) milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp butter (for greasing the baking dish)
